Bentley's history is associated with luxury and grace, but another attribute that could be added is high performance. Up until 1982 the company had been more concerned with producing the best car money could buy, but then it turbocharged the Mulsanne. The car was a phenomenal performer for such a heavyweight, and the R/T continued that tradition. To make such a big, luxurious and heavy car go so fast, a lot of power was needed, and thanks to a V8, albeit a basic one with a single in-block cam and two overhead valves per cylinder, displacing close to 427ci (7 liters) and breathed on by a Garret turbo, the R/T goes at the pace you'd expect of a low-slung supercar. Stiff suspension and electronically controlled shocks kept the ride smooth, though the handling was exceptional too. Big 18-inch (457mm) rims went against tradition, but run 265/45 ZR-rated tyres in the R/T's sporting theme.
