The Boss Mustang was based on a the new-for-1971 fastback design model, or 'SportsRoof' as Ford called it. It superseded the Boss 302 and 429 versions and, though bigger, was both quicker and equally good in cornering. The suspension remained conventional with coil sprung wishbones and a thick anti-roll bar at the front, plus a leaf spring rear with staggered shocks to prevent wheel hop. The Boss got stiffer suspension, however, and continued the previous model's stiffer spindles and reinforced shock towers for improved durability under hard cornering. The brakes were better too with 11.3-inch (287mm) vented discs at the front that could stop the car from 80mph (129km/h) in 250ft (76.2m). Optional 7xl5-inch (178x381mm) Magnum wheels also improve the Boss. Inside, the dash had a wraparound feel with instruments in the center console and a large, T-handle shifter.
