Up until the introduction of the 2000 Cobra R, the 1995 model was the fastest Mustang ever. The 'R' stood for race and the Special Vehicle Team (SVT) at Ford made sure owners weren't going to lose any. Inside the car the sound-deadening was deleted, as was the radio, rear seats, rear window defrost, electric windows and air-conditioning, in an effort to save weight. The Cobra R even came with basic velour seats, as Ford realized most people would change these for race buckets. Eibach progressive rate springs and Koni adjustable shocks were fitted, and the front anti-roll bar was fattened. The engine was that from the Ford Lightning, a 351ci (5.8-liter) V8 with GT40 heads, special Cobra intake, SVO camshaft and bigger mass air meter. It put out so much torque that Ford had to fit a stronger gearbox so chose the Tremec 3550. This car ran 12-second quarter-mile times.
