Being Ford USA's premium brand, Lincoln has always had the bias towards luxury, but the MkVIII took it to a new level. Carrying on developments made in the MkVII, the 1993 model became superior and had radically modern looks in order to take on the influx of European and Japanese cars. The new swoopy lines won many fans, as did the new all-alloy 32-valve V8 Modular engine later used in the Mustang Cobra. Coupled to the new 4R70W automatic overdrive transmission, the drive train made the MkVIII a capable performer, which could also be laid-back. Handling was very good too, the car feeling agile whilst remaining supple, thanks to air springs at each corner. To get in you had to punch in a code before the door handle would operate, but once inside you were treated to a very modern and ergonomic dash, with a full complement of toys.
