Based on the Fox platform, the new-for-1979 Mercury Capri ran alongside its more successful Mustang stablemate during the 1980s. It was offered only as a hatchback with a bulbous back window, and came with slightly widened arches, and these less attractive points saw its sales gently decline throughout the 1980s. However, it still represented something of a performance bargain, thanks to a strong and revvy V8 with sequential fuel injection and excellent economy, plus it was at least practical, thanks to the hatchback rear. The RS package gave the car gas shocks and a pair of Quad shocks which were arranged horizontally to the rear axle to control wheel hop, plus meaty Goodyear Eagle 2125/60 tyres on 7x15-inch (244x381mm) alloy rims. With a very positive T5 Borg Warner manual gearbox, it made quite a driver's car, one which would accept all the same mods as a Mustang.
