Steve Saleen's company had been modifying and selling its own Mustang for years before the Explorer came to light in 1990, so it was natural for the company to take on Ford's S.U.V. It was 1996 when they did, after the launch of the Ford Explorer V8 which used the pushrod 5.0L engine. Saleen launched their version in 1998 and concentrated on giving it enhanced driver appeal and a more dynamic road presence, where most 4WD S.U.Vs spent their time. The separate steel chassis and live axle were retained, but stiffer bushes were added throughout the suspension, plus the springs were both lowered and uprated and the shocks re-valved. Thicker anti-roll bars replaced the stock items, and with lightweight magnesium 18-inch (457mm) rims and low-profile tyres, the car could pull 0.80g on the skidpad. Finishing off was a spoiler and, on this model, a supercharger.
