Steve Saleen made his name in 1984 racing his own modified Mustang. He produced three examples which got sold, then in 1985 modified and sold a further 139 hatchbacks and two convertibles. In 1986 sales continued to grow so Saleen formed a racing team. By 1989 the race and road experience led to the production of the SSC, or Saleen Super Car. Based on the 5.0L LX, Saleen had modified the suspension by adding stiffer springs and adjustable shocks, and improved the chassis rigidity by fitting a strut brace and 4-point roll cage. A special Saleen leather interior and bodykit finished it all off. In the drive train Saleen look the standard 5.0L and re-worked the heads, increased the throttle body size, got more lift from the cam and increased exhaust flow. The gearbox remained, but the rear end gears were changed for 3.55:1 ratio and discs were added to the rear.
